The precise question
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Dissolving it in water unquestionably creates magnesium and sulfate ions in the bath. The unresolved step is whether enough magnesium crosses intact human skin during an ordinary bath to produce a meaningful systemic effect.
Skin is an effective barrier, particularly to hydrated, charged ions. The commonly cited human evidence is small, methodologically limited, or unpublished. A review of transdermal magnesium concluded that promotion had moved ahead of the evidence and that claims require more rigorous research.1
Plausibility is not demonstrated benefit
Hair follicles and sweat glands are sometimes proposed as routes. Laboratory or animal observations can help generate a hypothesis. Neither establishes how much magnesium enters a person during a normal consumer bath, how variable that amount is, or whether it changes a relevant health outcome.
Better language for a magnesium bath
It is accurate to say that Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate or that the bath contains a dissolved magnesium salt. It is reasonable to describe dissolution and mineral water feel. It is not responsible to promise that a soak replenishes magnesium, corrects deficiency, treats pain, or detoxifies the body.
The useful reframing
An Epsom-salt bath does not need an absorption story to be a valid ritual. Warm-water immersion, a defined pause, aroma, and sensory water changes can stand on their own. If magnesium status is a medical concern, assessment and treatment belong with a qualified professional—not a bath-product claim.
